Bump in the Night

Bump in the Night

Synopsis of Saturday Morning Show

For every kid who ever wondered what went bump in the night, this show gave the comforting answer: monsters. Actually, these were friendly monsters, led by a bug-eyed green thing called Mr. Bumpy.

Bumpy lived under the bed of a ten-year-old known only as The Boy. The Boy kept Bumpy happy by leaving chewed up bubble gum on the bedpost and providing plenty of sweaty old socks for Bumpy to eat (his favorite treat).

Bumpy’s best friend was Squishington (“Squishy” for short), a neat-freak blobby blue monster who lived in the toilet tank. Rounding out the cast of friends was Molly Coddle, a “comfort doll” made of assorted parts, which she frequently had to sew back on. Molly wasn’t one of The Cute Dolls, but she made people happy. Bumpy had a rival for The Boy’s affection, a remote-control robot warrior named Destructo. The gang also had to be on guard against the Closet Monster, a hodgepodge of clothes, blankets, etc., who would strike without warning.

Bump in the Night featured advanced stop-motion animation techniques, perfect for capturing the kooky world of monsters, toys, insects, and other visitors. In addition to Bumpy and company’s adventures, each episode featured a visit to “Mr. Bumpy’s Karaoke Café,” where the show’s stars sang original songs and covers of popular tunes, with backup vocals from The Cute Dolls. The popular show ran for a few seasons on ABC before airing in syndication on cable’s Toon Disney.
