Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
Synopsis of Saturday Morning Show
For those who believe that comedian Jim Carrey is actually a cartoon disguised in human form, the 1995-96 cartoon season offered abundant evidence. Three of Carrey’s starring vehicles were adapted to the small screen: Dumb and Dumber, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, and The Mask.
Ace Ventura continued the crime-solving capers of the nutty title character. Each week, Ace and his monkey sidekick Spike set out to solve a crime that was in some way animal-related. Like the movie Ace, cartoon Ace operated out of Miami, Florida, sporting a sculpted hairdo, a garish Hawaiian print shirt and striped pants pulled up almost to his chest, a la Urkel. And like the movie character, Ace was not above lowbrow humor, talking out of his butt cheeks when the mood was right.
Michael Hall covered the Jim Carrey role over the course of the series’ forty-one episodes, broadcast over a season and a half. Ace went into retirement after that, but Nickelodeon brought the P.D. back for a string of new episodes during the 1999-2000 season.
