Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

Synopsis of Saturday Morning Show

“It’s morphin time!”

When evil sorceress Rita Repulsa escaped from her Moon prison, ancient wise man Zordon recruited five earth teens to become the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The teens—Jason (Red Ranger), Zack (Black Ranger), Kimberly (Pink Ranger), Trini (Yellow Ranger), and Billy (Blue Ranger)—gained special powers and abilities, fancy suits and masks, and powerful assault vehicles called Zords.

The teens still masqueraded as normal students at Angel Grove High, but when Rita and her minions (Baboo, Finster, Goldar, Scorpina and Squatt) started trouble, the Rangers sprang into action. If things got really heavy, the five Zords could combine into a gigantic robot called a Megazord. Comic relief was provided by bumbling Angel Grove High students Bulk and Skull.

The Power Rangers phenomenon hit like no one could have predicted. The primary drawing force for kids was the hyperkinetic battle scenes in every episode, montages of super-powered karate/ninja/Zord action set to rock music. While it upset many parents, the kids ate it up, and soon the Rangers’ universe was expanding. New Rangers, new powers, new Zords, and new villains sprang up from every corner of the galaxy. Evil Lord Zedd took the reins of world domination from Rita (and later married her), and new variations on the Power Rangers theme proliferated every few years. Among them:

Power Rangers Zeo found the Rangers harnessing the power of the Zeo Crystal to become Zeo Rangers, fighting new enemies from the Machine Empire.

Power Rangers Turbo gave the Zeo Rangers new Turbo powers and Turbo Zords to fight the evil Divatox. Four new Rangers replaced old ones, and they gained new mentor Dimitria.

Power Rangers in Space sent the Rangers into space to rescue Zordon from a federation of baddies, including Rita, Lord Zedd, the Machine Empire, Divatox, Astronema and new evil leader Dark Specter.

Power Rangers Lost Galaxy took place in the future, where the Rangers lived on space colony Terra Venture. New space aliens led by wicked Scorpius threatened to invade the colony.

Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue brought five new teens into the Ranger uniforms, fighting evil at the speed of light. This time, that evil took the form of Diabolico and his monster hordes.

Power Rangers Time Force introduced yet another new Ranger bunch, battling a year 3000 bad guy with the power of time travel.

The series also spawned two feature films, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie and Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie, as well as innumerable action figures, lunchboxes, video games, sleeping bags, backpacks, etc. The series' popularity eventually waned from its lofty mid-90's heights, but new series have kept the Rangers going into the 00's. And you can still get the blood of Morphin fans pumping with four simple words:

"Go, go, Power Rangers!"
