Synopsis of Saturday Morning Show

“Come to where the magic is, where the rainbow ends,
Follow, follow My Little Pony, My Little Pony ‘n Friends…”

In the sweet countryside of Dream Valley lived a group of little ponies in pastel colors with long, flowing manes. Hasbro’s My Little Pony toy line was as big a hit with young girls as its G.I. Joe was with little boys. And like those Real American Heroes, the Ponies made their television debut in the mid-80’s.

My Little Pony had already had a pair of TV specials in 1984 and ’85, and in 1986, My Little Pony: The Movie was released in theaters, with all-star cast including Cloris Leachman, Tony Randall, Madeline Kahn, Rhea Perlman, and Danny DeVito. In the fall of that same year, My Little Pony ‘n Friends appeared in syndication. The show included four segments:

My Little Pony featured an extensive lineup of Ponies: athletic Gusty, wise Wind Whistler, fuzzy-brained Fizzy, shy Shady, short-tempered Lickety-Split, and many others. Together with the wise little Moochick, little buddies the Bushwoolies, human friends Megan, Molly and Danny, and little pink dragon Spike, the Ponies kept Ponyland safe from witches, trolls, and the like. The menace was never too menacing, and sometimes even the bad guys learned a lesson.

The Glo Friends were a group of glowing insects (Glo-Worm, Glo-Spider, Lovebug, etc.) who explored the forest looking for Moondrops, the food that made them glow. Evil Rook and his Molligan cohorts tried to capture the Glo-Friends to work in their underground mines.

Potato Head Kids grew out of another Hasbro product. In this segment, the title kids—Big Chip, Spud, Spike, Smarty, and Pumpling—got themselves in and out of trouble. Mr. And Mrs. Potato Head popped up in different roles in every episode.

Moondreamers were magical glowing pixies who controlled dreams with their Dream Machine. If a manhole cover got loose in the Moondreamers’ city above the earth, Evil Scowlene and her Sleep Creeps could muck with children’s dreams, turning them into nightmares. Moondreamer friend Bucky Buckaroo delivered Dream Crystals via his comet to power the Dream Machine.

All four segments showcased original tunes within episodes. A new series, My Little Pony Tales, appeared on the Disney Channel in 1993, minus the three supporting “Friends.”
