Stirrup pants

Stirrup pants

Fashion Synopsis

Named after the foot handles of a horse’s saddle, stirrup pants created a smooth look in casual pants before the days of body-hugging cotton lycra leggings took the world over. Evolved from the functional design of ski pants, stirrup pants featured a band of fabric that was worn under the foot and helped to keep the pant pulled down.

Stirrups were popular in the 50’s when worn by the beats with large, baggy ‘sloppy joe’ sweaters . The look returned for a revival in the 80’s, once again being paired with big, oversized sweaters.
