Nostalgia for Victorian themes caught hold in the mid-80's, and old cameo brooches were the perfect accessory for floral blazers and Edwardian collared shirts. Cameos were those really cool ‘silhouette’ style designs (remember tracing your profile’s shadow on the wall, then cutting it out of black construction paper?) carved from cream-colored shell or stone and attached to velvet choker necklaces or brooch pins.
Girls riffled through their grandmother’s jewelry boxes for the real thing, or bought imitations from the racks at Claire’s Accessories store. They were perfect as neck brooches for the collar of your shirt, or attached to the breast pocket of your blazer. And they made you look vaguely retro-wholesome.
