Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?
Synopsis of Saturday Morning Show
The mysterious and elusive Carmen Sandiego moved into animation in 1994, as she continued to baffle even the stealthiest detectives of the Acme detective agency.
Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego? was a half-hour, Saturday morning animated series based on the success of the popular home computer game and television game show Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? Like its predecessors, Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego? told the story of world-class thief Carmen Sandiego and her pursuers, a pair of teen detectives.
The twist this time around, other than the characters' being animated and the gumshoe trio's being trimmed down to a duo, was that the story took place inside a home computer. The computer’s player often provided them with helpful hints, steering them in the right direction.
Intended as an educational game for children to learn geography, Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego? had teen sleuths from the Acme Detective Agency—18-year-old Ivy and 14-year-old brother Zack—picking up clues left behind by the crafty and elusive Ms. Sandiego, tipping them off as to the location of her worldly whereabouts. The adolescent private eyes then had to put their knowledge of geography to use in order to track down the swindler and reclaim the stolen loot.
In the animated series, the Chief from the live-action show was nothing more than a bodiless head who would advise the teenagers along the way. The Chief would dispatch portals to transport the kids back and forth from various destinations, providing random facts about each area in brief, comical bits. Home viewers got to play along as well, by being quizzed before each commercial break on the previous segment.
The animated Carmen Sandiego was as popular with adults as it was with kids, earning three Emmy nominations and one win during its successful network run.
