The Powerpuff Girls

The Powerpuff Girls

Synopsis of Saturday Morning Show

“Fighting crime, trying to save the world,
Here they come just in time, the Powerpuff Girls!”

Trying to create a batch of perfect little girls, Professor Utonium assembled all the right ingredients: sugar, spice, and everything nice. But somehow, a dash of Chemical X fell into the mix, giving the girls super powers—flight, strength, speed, laser vision, and more. The Professor took the girls under his wing, training them to fight crime as… The Powerpuff Girls!

Blossom was the group’s leader, Buttercup provided the attitude, and Bubbles was the sweet, sensitive one (but she could swing a punch as well as the rest). Together, the girls answered the Mayor’s calls for help, flying into action to battle such villains as the Gang Green Gang, “Him” (the devil), angry redneck Fuzzy Lumpkins, and mad monkey genius Mojo Jojo, who created his own trio of superpowered tykes, the Rowdy Ruff Boys—Boomer, Brick and Butch. Other Townsville residents included the Mayor’s chesty aide Sara Bellum, fellow Pokey Oaks Kindergarten student (and paste eater) Elmer, kindergarten teacher Miss Keane, and the Amoeba Boys, who tried to get the girls’ attention through petty acts of mischief.

Obviously, The Powerpuff Girls wasn’t your typical superhero fare, and creator Craig McCracken kept the mood light. Blossom, Buttercup, and Bubbles were still little girls, complete with puppy love crushes and bedtimes. Even in the show’s many action scenes, McCracken and company weren’t above throwing in Batman-like action balloons (“CHOOF!”)when a punch was thrown.

The combination of superhero action and campy comedy was an instant hit with The Cartoon Network's viewers. The Powerpuff Girls debuted as a segment of the network’s World Premiere Toons, but like fellow toons Dexter’s Laboratory and Johnny Bravo, it was too popular to be contained in a supporting role. The girls finally got their own series in 1998, and they have remained one of The Cartoon Network’s most popular draws ever since.
