The Great Grape Ape Show

The Great Grape Ape Show

Synopsis of Saturday Morning Show

Let's have an exercise in visualization, shall we? Imagine any city in the world. Now imagine that you live in that city. You’re successful, enjoying life, things couldn’t be going better. Now, imagine that a thirty-foot tall purple gorilla cruises into town, riding ON TOP of a van as if it were a skateboard—a van driven by the gorilla’s buddy, a fast-talking dog. Things in Anytown, USA will never be the same again, and you’re not very happy about it.

Neither were the denizens of the unidentified city Grape Ape and his pal Beegle Beagle came to visit in this show. The very fact that a creature of Grape Ape’s size existed put everyone on edge, no matter how nice the Big G was to everyone. His attempts to put them at ease usually backfired because, to paraphrase a certain moose, Grape Ape "don’t know his own strength."

It also didn't help that Grape Ape had a very scary voice, roughly the sound of someone belching through a sock. He referred to himself in the third person, and always twice at a time—"Grape Ape, Grape Ape"—and called Beegle Beagle "Beegily Beagily."

This show was originally a segment of The Tom and Jerry/Grape Ape Show, which aired in the 1975-76 season, becoming The Tom and Jerry/Grape Ape/Mumbly Show in the fall of '76. ABC phased Grape Ape out of the show in December of that year, only to bring him back the next season in this incarnation.

The Great Grape Ape Show ended its run after one season on its own. Beegle Beagle and Grape Ape, however, lived on as cast members of Scooby’s All-Star Laff-A-Lympics.
