Dr. Seuss hats

Dr. Seuss hats

Fashion Synopsis

“And he said to us,
‘Why do you sit there like that?
I know it is wet
And the sun is not sunny,
But we can have
Lots of good fun that is funny!’”

The classic words come from Dr. Seuss’ mischievous prankster, the Cat in the Hat, but you already knew that. Dr. Seuss’ creations have tickled generations of little ones (and their parents) since the first Seuss story, The Cat in the Hat, was published in 1955. And nothing was as fun or as funny as the friendly cat with the hat and cravat!

The nostalgia for childhood hit the 90’s Generation X hard, and even though these big kids were much too old for Seuss’ bedtime stories, they paid homage to their favorite Cat via a silly striped hat. The rave culture celebrated the wide-eyed innocence of childhood, and what better place to be than the whimsical, crazy and warped world of Dr. Seuss?

Club kids started the trend for the tall, red and white striped top hat that towered high above the head, and in a flash that hat was everywhere. Big kids of all ages were transformed into their childhood fantasies, and the hat became normal headgear here and there, and almost everywhere.

And when the Cat in the hat was questioned about everyone copying his fashion, he didn’t get mad, he didn’t get sad. Oh no, that Cat in the Hat was very glad.

“You asked me how I feel about all those copycats out there wearing tall red-and-white striped hats:

“I'm happy that everyone thinks I have style.
Seeing all those striped hats on their heads makes me smile.
They even can copy my bright red cravat.
But this cat's the only real Cat in the Hat.”
