Earrings had never been bigger. The larger-than-life phenomenon of the 80's was expressed through the bigness of hair, the bold colors of clothes, and the extravagance of makeup. In the midst of this jungle, small earrings would only get lost, and so earrings grew to enormous proportions to fight for rightful recognition.
Giant hoops, keys and crosses made a bold appearance, as well as the extreme “shoulder dusters.” As the name implies, these earrings dropped so far down from the ear that they literally touched, or ‘dusted’ the shoulders. Earrings became so big that earlobes stretched out of shape from the weight, or became permanently indented from the closure. Such a small price to pay for fashion!
