Mighty Morphin multi-media merchandising mania took the next logical step in this 1995 movie, an extension of the insanely popular Japanese import kids’ TV series. With a bigger budget for effects, new Zords, a soundtrack featuring the likes of Van Halen and Red Hot Chili Peppers, and a new villain played by Paul Freeman (Belloq from Raiders of the Lost Ark), Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie had more than enough oomph to keep young Ranger wannabes glued to their seats for an hour and a half.
The plot concerns one Ivan Ooze, a goo-spewing baddie unearthed from a big purple egg after 6,000 years. Mr. Ooze was placed in his eggy prison by Power Ranger mentor Zordon, and now the slimy villain wants revenge. The side of good is represented by our good-looking, multi-cultural, color-coded heroes, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Masquerading as ordinary teens, the Rangers spend their days at Angel Grove High, donning their Ranger suits when evil lurks.
And lurk it does, as Ivan Ooze joins with regular Ranger no-goodniks Lord Zedd and Rita Repulsa to defeat Zordon and the Rangers. Ivan succeeds in robbing the Rangers of their powers, leaving them with only their martial arts training to defend the planet and save Zordon. The six teens mount a quest to regain their powers, learn the secret art of Ninjetti, and form a new Zord to defeat a giant robot controlled by Ivan Ooze.
It wasn’t a Mighty Morphin megahit when it arrived in theaters, but Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie kept its fans happy with kick-fighting action and cool new characters. More importantly, the movie helped keep its television counterpart in the popular eye for several more seasons (in its various incarnations: Zeo, Turbo, in Space, etc.) A theatrical sequel followed in 1997, Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie.
