The second film picks up two years after the first, with Jesse still living fairly happily with the Greenwoods. The young man’s life is thrown for a loop when he learns his biological mother has died, leaving him in charge of a kid brother he never knew he had. Elvis, as the younger sib is called, mirrors the adolescent rebellion Jesse worked to overcome in the first film. Out on a sailing trip, Jesse is reunited with old orca pal Willy, who runs into a problem of his own.
An enormous oil tanker crashes in an ecologically sensitive area, and the spill threatens to destroy the whales’ marine habitat. Jesse’s family is also put in danger (along with new love interest Nadine) when evil tycoon Wilcox gets in on the action. Once again, boy and whale must work together to save the whales and save the day.
The film reunited most of the human leads from the first film, but Willy’s part was taken over by animatronic whales, miniatures and other special effects. The closing credits (played over another Michael Jackson-penned theme song) included a toll-free number dedicated to freeing the original Willy, an orca named Keiko, from captivity. The whale was eventually returned to the open seas.
