Bum bag, hip sack, fanny pack. Everyone seemed to strap on this hip bag in the late 80’s. A simple shaped pouch strapped belt-like around your waist, this revolutionary design freed the hands from cumbersome purses for women, and allowed men to empty their bulging pockets of wallets, car keys and other necessities.

Originating as an accessory for bicyclists and other sports enthusiasts, the ease and comfort of fanny packs spread out to the general public and soon rested on hips across the world. There were logo emblazoned souvenir packs for traveling tourists, fancy label leather for the upscale crowd, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the kids. Everyone wanted part of the action, wearing their packs as a badge of honor.

While as a fad, the fanny pack was short-lived, many still embrace the functionality of the pack, proudly displaying their fanny…pack.
