The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking
Synopsis of Movie
Everyone’s favorite pig-tailed anarchist made her first American film appearance in 1988’s The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking. Astrid Lindgren’s redheaded heroine was the star of a popular book series for young readers, and the precocious girl’s exploits had been chronicled on film several times in her native Sweden. This 1988 film brought the spunky Swede stateside for even more zany antics.
Pippi’s new adventures begin when her father’s ship wrecks off the Florida coast. The girl, pet horse Alphonso and monkey Mr. Neilson survive and make their way to the shore, where Pippi strikes up friendships with a pair of local kids.
Food fights, cartwheels, spontaneous songs and general pre-teen rebellion ensue, as Pippi fights the powers-that-be in order to stay out of school. Most adults dislike her, others simply want to steal her hidden gold, but the plucky youngster won’t be kept down.
The little girl’s infectious charm apparently didn’t infect enough bodies, as the film came and went fairly quickly from theaters. The character’s popularity went on unhampered, however, as evidenced by the 1997 animated feature Pippi Longstocking and a 1998 cartoon series of the same name
