Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure
Synopsis of Movie
From the pages of Johnny Gruelle’s cherished stories came Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure. The two rag dolls had entertained children for decades before making their first animated feature, in a story based on Gruelle’s Raggedy Ann & Andy and the Camel with the Wrinkled Knees.
Ann and Andy are merely toys until human girl Marcella calls them into service by reading them stories. A beautiful French doll named Babette has been kidnapped by pirates, and it’s up to our two cloth heroes to save her. The pair joins up with a sad, discarded blue camel (with wrinkled knees), neglected by those who once loved him, and set off to rescue fair Babette from criminals with names like Captain Contagious, Queasy and The Greedy.
The musical side of this Musical Adventure was provided by Joe Raposo, a former Sesame Street songwriter. For this film, Raposo penned several original tunes, including “Rag Dolly,” “Candy Hearts,” “Hooray for Me” and the melancholy camel’s “Blue.” The gang left the feature business after Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure, but the doll stars continued to work their magic on Saturday morning, as The Adventures of Raggedy Ann and Andy came to CBS in 1988.
