Donny and Marie Osmond

Synopsis of Pop Music

"I'm a little bit country,
I'm a little bit rock and roll..."

By the beginning of 1974, The Osmonds were one of the most successful show-biz families of all time. Between Osmonds singles and Donny’s solo tunes, they had scored a total of 18 gold records. Marie had notched up the first of several country hits with “Paper Roses,” and even Little Jimmy Osmond had scored a hit with “Long-Haired Lover From Liverpool.” It seemed that they had maximized their success, but as history would reveal, they had not yet unleashed their most successful act…

Donny and Marie’s beginning as a duet act was a happy accident. It all started when Donny tried to record a high-harmony vocal for a solo song he was working on, “I’m Leaving It All Up To You.” Due to his maturing voice, he couldn’t hit the high notes. Marie happened to be in the studio, and the producer asked her to sing the harmony part. It worked like a charm and the song was released as a duet, quickly becoming a #4 hit. The next year, the brother/sister tandem charted again with the Top-10 hit “Morning Side of the Mountain” and “Make the World Go Away.”

Donny and Marie hosted The Mike Douglas Show for a week in 1975. This brought them to the attention of ABC executive Fred Silverman, who decided to put them in their own variety show. The Donny and Marie Show debuted in January of 1976 and featured the hosts performing comedy skits with guest stars in between elaborate song and dance numbers performed at a dizzying pace. This vaudevillian-style show quickly caught on with the public and ran for four successful years. During this time, Donny and Marie also starred in their own film, Goin’ Coconuts.

When their show ended in 1980, Donny and Marie went their separate ways but continued to remain in the public eye. Marie returned to her country-music career and scored hits like “Meet Me In Montana.” Donny did extensive work on television and the stage, eventually returning to music in 1989 with hits like “Soldier of Love.” However, both stars reunited in 1998 to start their own talk show, The Donny and Marie Show, proving that this duo act was still very popular with the public.
