Those adorable little creatures with built in body-pockets were the inspiration behind the fast-track to fashion, must-have sneakers called KangaROOS. ‘Roos,’ as they were popularly called, spiced up the fading athletic shoe market when they introduced the shoe with the side zip-pocket. More than a novelty, the shoe with the pocket became the speediest seller in a market flooded with Reeboks, Nikes and Pumas.

Runners embraced the shoe for its handy storage space, and kids loved anything that could be played with like a toy. Bored in class? Play a little ditty on your zipper pocket shoe! Roos were modern with Velcro closures, zip pockets, and crayon colors. Shoe had become toy, and all was right with the world.
