Well if you grew up in the 60&#8217;s or 70s you may remember the Green Shield Stamps. Popular in the UK and founded in 1958, shoppers collected the green coloured stickers in a book. The filled books could later be exchanged for a range of household goods such as household items, garden furniture and toys. Green Shield Stamps founded by Granville Richard Francis Tompkins, were more often found in smaller shops in the early sixties. Local grocers, butchers, greengrocers, fishmongers, chemists, bakers, tobacconists, confectioners, drapers, ironmongers and petrol stations all gave Green Shield Stamps out as a type of promotion hook. Later in the sixties, big stores such as Tesco signed up the scheme. Similar to the UK, S&amp;H Green Stamps were \u2018trading stamps\u2019 that were very popular from the 1960s and 1970s. Basically customers would receive the stamps at participating retail outlets like grocery stores and gas stations. The more you bought, the more stamps they gave you. The stamps could later be redeemed for products in the S&amp;H Green Stamps catalogue. Which came first UK or USA?<\/p><div class=\"8871be0151e9a1cce1d799e087a990f7\" data-index=\"1\" style=\"float: none; margin:5px 0 5px 0; text-align:center;\">\nskool\r\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"autorelaxed\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1609637348681190\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"3558122710\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>For the customer it meant free gifts. The biggest irony was the gifts had to be paid for. It was the retailer who paid the stamp company. He may have passed on those costs to the customer, but Which? in 1965 found prices no higher in stores that gave away stamps. So it wasn&#8217;t as good as it sounded!<\/p>\n<p>So what could you exchange your full books for in the 1976? The stamps catalogue sold a dream of a more relaxed, informal lifestyle. Gone was the glitz and glamour of the 60s. In 1976 top gifts were:<\/p>\n<p>Philips Colour TV &#8211; 375 books<br \/>\nLec Chest Freezer &#8211; 140 books<br \/>\nCreda Starlight cooker &#8211; 115 books<br \/>\nHotpoint Automatic washing machine &#8211; 185 books<br \/>\nCar &#8211; any British make or model &#8211; ask for a quotation<br \/>\nRichard Tompkins, who brought Green Shield Stamps to the UK, launched the Argos Catalogue Showroom as a spin-off in 1973.<\/p>\n<p>Green Shield Stamps were less popular in the later 70s. Competition from the new supermarket, Kwik Save, made Tesco stop giving away stamps and concentrate on value.
