margin: 0px 0px 0px 0;\">\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- skool-response -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1609637348681190\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"3558122710\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"autorelaxed\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>Children&#8217;s Theater!\u00a0remembered\u00a0by Kevin Butler<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Local:<\/strong> WNBT\/WRCA\/WNBC TV Ch.4 NYC<br \/>\n<strong>Weekday evenings:<\/strong>1949 -1951<br \/>\n<strong>Saturday Mornings:<\/strong>1951-Saturday June 17,1961<br \/>\nHost \/ Narrator \/ Interviewer \/ Producer \/ Creator:\u00a0Ray Forrest.<\/p>\n<div>During a car pool trek from Ridgewood, N.J.to NYC in 1949.\u00a0WNBTV Ch.4 Producer Jack Riber told radio and tv broadcaster Ray Forrest\u00a0that the station execs wanted to present a daily children&#8217;s tv sereies for the\u00a0weekday evening timeslot.<\/div>\n<p>Riber told Forrest that he would get $100.00 per show, which\u00a0he would use to pay for the rental of films to screen on the show and he would\u00a0be reasponsible for the creation,producing and presentation of the program&#8217;s\u00a0format for the young viewers.<\/p>\n<p>Forrest was delight with the idea of hosting a children&#8217;s tv\u00a0variety show..but..when he found out that the only films that were availble\u00a0for the program were old movie comedies and Paul Terry&#8217;s&#8221;Farmer Grey&#8221;\u00a0movie cartoons.(The station execs told Mr.Forrest would have to provide\u00a0music accompaniment and narrations for the films..but the films were racist\u00a0and had too many sexual situations that were not for\u00a0the kids)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2021\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.skooldays.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Childrens-Theater.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2021\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2021\" title=\"Childrens-Theater\" src=\"http:\/\/www.skooldays.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Childrens-Theater.jpg\" alt=\"Ray Forest host of Childrens Theater\" width=\"500\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.skooldays.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Childrens-Theater.jpg 500w, http:\/\/www.skooldays.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Childrens-Theater-160x127.jpg 160w, http:\/\/www.skooldays.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Childrens-Theater-300x238.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.skooldays.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Childrens-Theater-377x300.jpg 377w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2021\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ray Forest host of Childrens Theater<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He refused to screen the films and he decided to screen\u00a0The &#8220;Encyclopedia Britanica&#8221;educational film package instead.\u00a0&#8220;Children&#8217;s Theater&#8221;debuted in 1949 and became a\u00a0popular series with the kids and their parents..it remained on the air.<\/p>\n<p>Until 1951, the heads of Ch.4 decided to drop the show\u00a0and replaced with a daily talk\/variety program hosted by Tex MacCreary and\u00a0Jinx Falkenberg and aimed at an adult audience.<\/p>\n<p>Forrest was going to be transfered back to the\u00a0radio sports division of The NBC Network.Outraged,Forrest\u00a0went to his boss Pat Kelly telling him that he was quitting tv\u00a0and going back into the family jewlery business.Prior to his\u00a0show being cancelled..The station execs told Forrest that since\u00a0Tex &amp; Jinx&#8217; news series was not ready to go on the air.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Children&#8217;s Theater&#8221; would air on Monday and\u00a0Tuesday evening.Given a slight reprive..Forrest decided to\u00a0speak with the parents at the conclusion of the tuesday broadcast.<\/p>\n<p>In a April 12,1997 taped interview with tv historian\u00a0and author:Jeff Kissloff..Forrest recalled&#8221;At the beginning of the\u00a0program..I said &#8216;&#8221;Now Boy and Girls..later on in the program..I\u00a0would like you to bring your mothers and fathers in,because I have<br \/>\nsomething to tell them.&#8221;<\/p><div class=\"e526d1e761560160a119e3b74cb2a974\" data-index=\"1\" style=\"float: none; margin:5px 0 5px 0; text-align:center;\">\nskool\r\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"autorelaxed\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1609637348681190\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"3558122710\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>When the parents of the show&#8217;s young viewers tuned\u00a0in to the end of the broadcast to hear Mr.Forrest&#8217;s message&#8221;For\u00a0three years, I have been trying to give your children a decent tele-vision program that they can learn something from and still\u00a0enjoy.If you liked it? (Please) don&#8217;t write to me..because I&#8217;m\u00a0going to be back in the jewelery business with my family in New Jersey..but?\u00a0If you liked It?..Write to the(TV)station and maybe they&#8217;ll do something like\u00a0this for you in the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Parents were angered about the show&#8217;s abrupt cancellation\u00a0and they sent in complaints to the station execs at WNBT demanding\u00a0it&#8217;s return.<\/p>\n<p>Seeing that it was a mistake to drop the series..the\u00a0heads of Ch.4 offered to move &#8220;Children&#8217;s Theater&#8221; to a saturday\u00a0morning timeslot and expanded the format from 30 minutes to\u00a0an hour.Seeing that he needed more time to prepare a better show\u00a0for his audience.<\/p>\n<p>Forrest asked to delay the show&#8217;s return until the\u00a0following weekend. The station execs agreed and &#8220;Children&#8217;s\u00a0Theater&#8221;became a popular weekend program.<\/p>\n<p>Along with the games, craftmaking,hobbies,\u00a0informational segments and inteviews with guest performers,\u00a0personalities and members of the studio audience.<\/p>\n<p>Forrest also did shows on location at Navy ships and planes and he screened\u00a0his own films that he shot underwater to show his viewers life\u00a0under the seas of the Florida Keys.He even did some shows from a blimp\u00a0and inside a submarine.<\/p>\n<p>The timeslot of &#8220;Children&#8217;s Theater&#8221; soon expanded to an\u00a0hour and a half and won awards from &#8220;TV Guide&#8221; as &#8220;best Children&#8217;s\u00a0TV Personality to be picked up by the network&#8221; (The series was never\u00a0seen on the full NBC TV Network) and in 1957..&#8221;Children&#8217;s Theater&#8221;\u00a0shared The NYC Emmy Award with WCBS TV Ch.2&#8217;s &#8220;On The Carousel&#8221;\u00a0as &#8220;Best Children&#8217;s TV Show&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The series also acquired The 1957 color &#8220;Crusader Rabbit&#8221;\u00a0and &#8220;Pow Wow The Indian Boy&#8221; TV Cartoons and they were shown\u00a0on the program.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Children&#8217;s Theater&#8221; also took it&#8217;s viewers on a filmed\u00a0trip to NYC&#8217;s most ambitious theme park &#8220;Freedomland USA&#8221; in\u00a01960 and showed them how the park was built and how it operated\u00a0and recreated events from American History.<\/p>\n<p>Ray Forrest continued to educate, entertain and inform\u00a0his viewers and studio audiences on &#8220;Children&#8217;s Theater&#8221;..until the\u00a0heads of WNBC TV Ch.4 closed down the theater following the\u00a0Saturday June 17,1961 broadcast.<\/p>\n<p>Ray Forrest would retire from tv broadcasting following\u00a0the cancellation of his series..but..the success of&#8221;Children&#8217;s Theater&#8221;helped\u00a0to set the standards for other quality educational kids tv shows to follow.<\/p>\n<!--CusAds0-->\n<div style=\"font-size: 0px; height: 0px; line-height: 0px; margin: 0; padding: 0; clear: both;\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<a href=\"http:\/\/www.skooldays.com\/blog\/childrens-theater\/\"><img width=\"125\" height=\"99\" src=\"http:\/\/www.skooldays.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Childrens-Theater-160x127.jpg\" class=\"alignright tfe wp-post-image\" alt=\"Ray Forest host of Childrens Theater\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.skooldays.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Childrens-Theater-160x127.jpg 160w, http:\/\/www.skooldays.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Childrens-Theater-300x238.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.skooldays.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Childrens-Theater-377x300.jpg 377w, http:\/\/www.skooldays.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Childrens-Theater.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 125px) 100vw, 125px\" \/><\/a><p>Children&#8217;s Theater!\u00a0remembered\u00a0by Kevin Butler Local: WNBT\/WRCA\/WNBC TV Ch.4 NYC Weekday evenings:1949 -1951 Saturday Mornings:1951-Saturday June 17,1961 Host \/ Narrator \/ Interviewer \/ Producer \/ Creator:\u00a0Ray Forrest.
