{"id":1964,"date":"2011-08-30T10:52:31","date_gmt":"2011-08-30T09:52:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.skooldays.com\/blog\/?p=1964"},"modified":"2011-08-30T16:23:21","modified_gmt":"2011-08-30T15:23:21","slug":"steampipe-alley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.skooldays.com\/blog\/steampipe-alley\/","title":{"rendered":"Steampipe Alley"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"e526d1e761560160a119e3b74cb2a974\" data-index=\"4\" style=\"float: left; margin: 0px 0px 0px 0;\">\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- skool-response -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1609637348681190\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"3558122710\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"autorelaxed\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<div>Steampipe Alley review by Kevin Butler<\/div>\n<div><strong>Local:<\/strong> WWOR TV Ch.9<\/div>\n<div><strong>Sunday Mornings:<\/strong> \u00a0Sunday\u00a0February 7,1988-April,1993<\/div>\n<div><strong>Host\/Performer:\u00a0<\/strong>Mario Cantone<br \/>\n&#8220;Rosita The wise cracking lady\u00a0dragon puppet&#8221;(Voiced and\u00a0manipulated by the show&#8217;s\u00a0director:Judy Katsheka)<\/div>\n<p>In the winter of 1987..WOR TV Ch.9 moved it&#8217;s tv studios to\u00a0The Seacaucus, New Jersey area and built a new state of the arts\u00a0studio and changed it&#8217;s call letters to WWOR.<\/p>\n<p>They also began to create and develop new and original\u00a0tv shows for their audiences.Since local tv stations were losing\u00a0their viewers to cable programming and to the home video market.<\/p>\n<p>Also..with deregulation imposed by The Regan administraion\u00a0The heads of Ch.9 decided to create,produce and present a fun kids\u00a0tv show that would be hosted by either a personality or a performer.<\/p>\n<p>The station execs hired former CBS TV weatherman Mark\u00a0McWhen to mc their sunday morning kids variety tv series.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1965\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.skooldays.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Steampipe-Alley.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1965\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1965\" title=\"Steampipe-Alley\" src=\"http:\/\/www.skooldays.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Steampipe-Alley.jpg\" alt=\"WWOR 1992 Steampipe Alley\" width=\"500\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.skooldays.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Steampipe-Alley.jpg 500w, http:\/\/www.skooldays.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Steampipe-Alley-160x127.jpg 160w, http:\/\/www.skooldays.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Steampipe-Alley-300x238.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.skooldays.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Steampipe-Alley-377x300.jpg 377w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1965\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">WWOR Steampipe Alley from the 80s and 90s<\/p><\/div>\n<p>McWhen was leaving CBS TV following the cancellation\u00a0of the network&#8217;s failed attemp to create,produce and present a weekday\u00a0morning talk\/variety\/news show&#8221;The CBS Morning Show&#8221;..but just as\u00a0he was about to leave the network.<\/p>\n<p>The heads of CBS TV revamped the format and made into\u00a0a more serious news program titled&#8221;CBS:This Morning&#8221;and they enticed\u00a0McWhen to stay on as the show&#8217;s weatherman.<\/p>\n<p>Seeing that they needed a replacement for McWhen, the\u00a0station execs held auditions for a new host for their kids tv show.<\/p>\n<p>They finally found their choice in the person of a\u00a0zany stage and nightclub comedy performer from Boston,Ma.\u00a0Mario Cantone. At the time,Cantone was doing a guest appearance\u00a0on WWOR TV&#8217;s new weekday moring talk \/ variety show &#8220;People Are\u00a0Talking&#8221; \/ &#8220;The Richard Bey Show&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Impressed with his talents as a mimic and his stand\u00a0up comedy routines and also impressed with his credits as a former\u00a0child actor in local theater and on local kids tv shows in Boston.<\/p>\n<p>Cantone was asked to audition for the show..he won the\u00a0audition and &#8220;Steampipe Alley&#8221;made it&#8217;s debut on WWOR TV on\u00a0Sunday Morning February 7,1988.<\/p>\n<p>Set against the backdrop of a makeshift clubhouse in the basement\u00a0of an inner city apartment building.Cantone would engage the studio\u00a0audience of kids in games,songs,comedy skits and interviews with guest\u00a0performers and personalities.<\/p>\n<p>One of the games that was presented on the program was\u00a0the revival of a concept that Sonny Fox first ultilized on his Saturday\u00a0morning kids tv game show &#8220;Just For Fun&#8221; on WNEW TV Ch.5 in NYC\u00a0two decades before&#8221;The Mystery Guest&#8221;.<\/p><div class=\"e526d1e761560160a119e3b74cb2a974\" data-index=\"1\" style=\"float: none; margin:5px 0 5px 0; text-align:center;\">\nskool\r\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"autorelaxed\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1609637348681190\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"3558122710\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>A panel of three kids would try to find out the identity of\u00a0&#8220;The Mystery Guest&#8221;by asking the guest questions..while being blindfolded.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Fat Boys&#8221;,Max Wright,&#8221;Morris The Cat&#8221;,&#8221;Bugs Bunny&#8221;\u00a0(An actor in a costume played the popular movie cartoon character)and even\u00a0Controversial\u00a0tv talk show host:Morton Downey,Jr. would serve as &#8220;The Mystery\u00a0Guest&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Cantone would also introduce a feature..where he would\u00a0play a wise teenage sage named&#8221;Richie Morales&#8221;..who would dispense\u00a0some important values to the viewers at home.<\/p>\n<p>The show also feature two segments &#8220;Well? Excuse Me!&#8221;\u00a0and&#8221;Mom:Cut It Out&#8221;where the kids at home would send their letters\u00a0telling Cantone and the kids in the studio audience about their problems\u00a0with members of the family and friends and kids at school.<\/p>\n<p>The show also feature reruns of The &#8220;Looney Tunes&#8221;,\u00a0&#8220;Merrie Melodies&#8221; and &#8220;Tom &amp; Jerry&#8221;movie cartoons.<\/p>\n<p>And a talent contest..where some undiscovered talented\u00a0kids would show off their musical abilities to the studio audiences and to\u00a0the viewers.\u00a0More often than not?<\/p>\n<div>Mario would use his comedic characters\u00a0to help lead into the show&#8217;s games: &#8220;Angelo Antonelli&#8221; would lead into\u00a0&#8220;The Three Sewer Monte&#8221;game(Where a lucky girl or boy would answer\u00a0a question and then choose a sewer pipe..which when it was opened up..\u00a0the lucky kid would win either a collection of toys, Hershey candies or\u00a0a pound of Spider&#8217;s Primavera..Pasta with rubbe bugs mixed in.), &#8220;The Verminator&#8221; (A parody of Arnold Schwarzenegger&#8217;s &#8220;The\u00a0Terminator&#8221; ) would lead the kids in the &#8220;Pie In The Eye&#8221; game. where the kid\u00a0had to find an eye or some other item hidden inside of a pie, and &#8220;Out Of Gas&#8221;\u00a0had &#8220;Poochano Paveracchi&#8221;(a parody of Luchano Paveratti the opera singer)\u00a0would leave the kids in a variation of musical chairs.<\/div>\n<p>Cantone would also perform comedy skits as the egotistical\u00a0singer&#8221;Julio Bodachus&#8221;.who was always being upstaged by the\u00a0wisecracking dragon puppet&#8221;Rosita&#8221;(&#8220;Rosita&#8221;was maniplated and\u00a0voiced by the show&#8217;s director..Ms.Judy Katsheka).<\/p>\n<p>The show would be taped first at the WWOR TV Ch.9 studios in\u00a0Seacaucus,N.J. and for a time at The Universal studios in Hollywood,Cal.\u00a0(This was when Ch.9 was owned briefly by Universal TV)during the fall\u00a0and spring months..which would give Cantone free time to perform in the\u00a0clubs.<\/p>\n<p>The show remain on the show..until the fall of 1990..when Ch.9\u00a0was bought by Chriscraft TV Inc. The wife of the new owner of the station\u00a0disliked the format of &#8220;Steampipe Alley&#8221;and she also disliked Cantone&#8217;s\u00a0humor.<\/p>\n<p>She requested that the show be cancelled..In April of 1993\u00a0&#8220;Steampipe Alley&#8221; called it&#8217;s last club meeting and with it&#8217;s cancellation..\u00a0the golden age of NYC&#8217;s fun kids tv shows came to an end.<\/p>\n<!--CusAds0-->\n<div style=\"font-size: 0px; height: 0px;
