He recalled a series of children&#8217;s recordings\u00a0that he cut and performed on back in the late 1930&#8217;s for the Decca Label.\u00a0Where he sang about a happy letter carrier.<\/p>\n<p>He believed that&#8221;A person..who is not(A)part of the family but\u00a0who is always in a child&#8217;s life..&#8221;can instill good values within that\u00a0child and be able to entertain them and be a positive role model for\u00a0the children.<\/p>\n<p>Accepting his concept..&#8221;The Merry Mailman&#8221;made his debut\u00a0on WOR TV Ch.9 on Monday evening:October 16,1950.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortuneatly..the show was presented as a cartoon fest..\u00a0where Heatherton did little more than stand in front of a curtain\u00a0in his mailman&#8217;s uniform and introduce old movie cartoons from\u00a0Europe and commercials.<\/p>\n<p>The show was not doing well and it was in danger of\u00a0being cancelled..until the station execs hired a creative showman\u00a0named Sandy Howard to develop the series&#8217; format.<\/p>\n<p>A former press agent,author of short stories and talent manager\u00a0his broadcasting career as an associate producer of radio and tv programs\u00a0including the pioneering panel show&#8221;Author Meets The Critics&#8221;with Martin\u00a0Stone for NBC TV. He created a fantasy backdrop for the series&#8221;Merry Mail\u00a0Land&#8221;( a mythical kingdom ruled over by a kindly and wise puppet monarch\u00a0&#8220;King Orlando&#8221;)and developed the concept into a wraparound or variety\u00a0show.( A Children&#8217;s tv show that can entertain,inform and educate children)<\/p>\n<p>Where Heatherton&#8217;s&#8221;Merry Mailman&#8221;would entertain,educate and\u00a0inform a studio audience of young people and his viewers with games, stories,\u00a0craftmaking, hobbies, songs, informational segments and interviews with guest\u00a0performers,personalities and members of the studio audience.<\/p>\n<p>The series also featured character comedy and puppet skits that were\u00a0performed by comic\/character actor and mimic:Milt Moss..who would also\u00a0provided voices for the animals that appeared on the show and &#8220;The Merry\u00a0Mailman&#8221;would talk about the animal&#8217;s life span,breeding habits etc to the\u00a0kids.<\/p>\n<p>Moss also manipulated and voiced another group of unique creatures\u00a0&#8220;The Weatherheads&#8221;..a strange troop of puppets that presented the daily\u00a0weather reports to the kids.<\/p>\n<p>There was also entertainment provided by &#8220;The Topsey Turvey\u00a0Auctioneer&#8221;(played by entertainer and future antique toy collector and\u00a0seller:Chic Darrow)..Darrow&#8217;s zany salesman character would perform\u00a0magic tricks,song and dance numbers,juggle,comedy skits and make\u00a0balloon sculptures for the studio audiences.<\/p><div class=\"e526d1e761560160a119e3b74cb2a974\" data-index=\"1\" style=\"float: none; margin:5px 0 5px 0; text-align:center;\">\nskool\r\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"autorelaxed\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1609637348681190\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"3558122710\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>Howard also replaced the old movie cartoons from overseas with\u00a0reruns of the &#8220;Terrytoones&#8221;movie cartoons and &#8220;The Merry Mailman&#8221;\u00a0also screened the 1949 tv versions of &#8220;Crusader Rabbit&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The series became a hit with NYC&#8217;s young viewers and Heatherton\u00a0and his two comedy asistants were in demand for personal appearances at\u00a0movie theaters and other venues in the NYC\/NJ\/Ct\/ areas. The show was\u00a0spun off into a syndicated children&#8217;s radio show that aired Monday,Wednesday\u00a0and Friday evenings and Saturday and Sunday afternoons on The WOR\/Mutual\u00a0Radio Network from 1953 to 1955.<\/p>\n<p>Parents and teachers loved the show and made it the one program\u00a0appropriate enough for their children to watch.<\/p>\n<p>The show was doing well&#8230;until Ray Heatherton became a victim\u00a0of The Black List.<\/p>\n<p>An unscrupulous individual from Upstate New York..who claimed\u00a0to be the owner of a supermarket chain..made false statements that Heatherton\u00a0was a communist and he contacted his sponsors to drop their support of the\u00a0show.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of this scandell &#8220;The Merry Mailman&#8221;lost his sponsors\u00a0but, the show continued as a station sustained program..due to the support\u00a0and belief from WOR TV&#8217;s Vice President and General Manager:Mr.Tom\u00a0O&#8217;Neil. Who refused to accept the lies form the crazed demmagogue that\u00a0Ray Heatherton was a communist.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Merry Mailman&#8221;was seen Weekday evenings and afternoons\u00a0and for a time on Saturday mornings..until the show was cancelled\u00a0following The Friday March 22,1956 broadcast.<\/p>\n<p>Heatherton went onto host and perform on a combination\u00a0live action and filmed musical\/dramatic anthology series&#8221;The Ray\u00a0Heatherton Theater&#8221;on Ch.9. Which was seen weekday evenings\u00a0starting on Monday January 9,1956.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike his pioneering children&#8217;s tv series..Heatherton&#8217;s\u00a0musical\/dramatic anthology series was aimed at a teenage\u00a0audience..the series format had him perform some songs,\u00a0introduce a dramatic movie and then perform a dramatic\u00a0scene live with a guest actor.<\/p>\n<p>The series was not a hit with the teenage viewers and\u00a0it left the air following the Friday March 9,1956 broadcast.<\/p>\n<p>Heatherton went onto host two children&#8217;s tv cartoon\u00a0shows&#8221;The Cartoon Parade&#8221;(Which was seen weekday\u00a0evenings on Ch.9 from Monday March 12,1956 to Friday\u00a0June 26,1956 and later on weekday afternoons on Ch.9 from Monday June\u00a023,1956 to Friday September 14,1956) and\u00a0The weekend evening edition of WPIX TV Ch.11\u00a0NYC&#8217;s &#8220;Popeye Show&#8221;from Saturday and Sunday September 8 &amp; 9,1956 to\u00a0Sunday April 13,1958\u00a0as &#8220;Capt.Ray&#8221;.<\/p>\n<div>By the late 1950&#8217;s however..local tv stations no longer\u00a0created,produced and presented children&#8217;s tv shows that\u00a0had elelaborate formats and characters..they prefered to\u00a0screen cartoons and films produced by outside studios\u00a0and have their own broadcasters or well known entertainers\u00a0introduce the films and present the sponsors and linit their\u00a0enterainment segments to a few minutes on camera.<\/div>\n<p>Very few tv kids shows were able to create and present\u00a0a quality series without any creative interference from station\u00a0managment.<\/p>\n<p>By this time..Heatherton&#8217;s children&#8217;s wraparound show\u00a0was no longer on the air and he was forced to host &#8220;The Cartoon\u00a0Parade&#8221; and &#8220;The Popeye Show&#8221;without a studio audience or\u00a0his comedy asistants.<\/p>\n<p>In the fall of 1961..he tried to revive his happy letter carrier\u00a0character again on&#8221;The Merry Mailman&#8217;s Funhouse&#8221;on WPIX TV\u00a0Ch.11 in NYC.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Merry Mailman&#8217;s Funhouse&#8221;debuted on Ch.11 as a\u00a0lunchtime program on Monday Afternoon September 25,1961\u00a0but..the station execs at Ch.11 treated the program as just another\u00a0cartoon fest.<\/p>\n<p>Heatherton was again forced stand in front of another\u00a0backdrop..this time a painted recreation of a city park and introduce\u00a0&#8220;The Clutch Cargo&#8221; and &#8220;Mellotunes&#8221;tv cartoons and Al Christie\u00a0film comedies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Merry Mailman&#8217;s Funhouse&#8221;remained on the air until\u00a0it was cancelled following the Friday May 31,1963 broadcast.\u00a0Despite the cancellation..Ray Heatherton&#8217;s Former NYC<\/p>\n<p>based children&#8217;s wraparound tv program set the standards for such\u00a0quality series as&#8221;Let&#8217;s Take A Trip&#8221;With Sonny Fox,&#8221;Captain Kangaroo&#8221;\u00a0with Bob Keeshan,&#8221;The Sandy Becker Show&#8221;,&#8221;Mr.Rogers&#8217; Neghiborhood&#8221;,\u00a0&#8220;Watch Mr.Wizard&#8221; and&#8221;Lamb Chop&#8217;s Playalong&#8221;..which would debut\u00a0in the following decades.<\/p>\n<!--CusAds0-->\n<div style=\"font-size: 0px;
