Saturday in the 80s

Video games (Pac-Man), toys that became cartoons and other fads (Smurfs, G.I.Joe, Transformers), as well as a wave of “regressed” characters as children, or having children of their own.(Muppet Babies, Pink Panther and Sons) all pointed toward an uncertain future. The proliferation of weekday afternoon syndicated original programming coupled with the arrival of cable TV spelled imminent doom for a rapidly eroding Saturday morning. Then, we were Saved By the Bell.

  1. This is fantastic, thank you.

There was an interstitial show in the early to mid 80’s that I can’t quite remember. The title sequence featured a man reciting a few lines from the Walrus and the Carpenter, “The time has come, the Walrus said, to talk of many things”, etc. The sequence animation included the different objects (cabbages, kings, etc.) floating across the screen. It was not directly related to Alice in Wonderland. Any memory of what that show might have been called? Thanks.

  2. I am pretty sure it was ABC. Most of the shows I would typically watch were on that network. I started to wonder the other day if it was a segment on Captain Kangaroo but I don’t think it was. Thanks!

    • Bumping this question…I remember this but can’t find the answer either. Help! I grew up in the Cleveland area. Any chance this was a local production?

      • Found this question while researching the very same show. My friend and I both remember the same as you – we distinctly remember the recitation of the Walrus and the Carpenter and the animation of the objects to go along with it. We also grew up in the Cleveland area. Would love to know what this show was!

          • I believe it was called “Walrus Tales”, the only thing I’ve found was in an obituary for music composer Robert DeGaetano.

          • So something recently sparked my memory of watching these segments as well, and my Google search to find the title led me here. I do seem to remember it being called “Walrus Tales”. I also grew up in Cleveland. I don’t think it was a part of any other variety-type show, and I have no idea what network it was on. Has anyone found any further information on this?

  3. What was this show from the 80s where there was this guy in a yellow costume with pointy shoes.

There was an episode where this kid walked in and said make me a banana. And the yellow costume character says zap you’re a banana and turned the kid into a banana.

  4. It wasn’t just Cleveland. I grew up in West Tennessee and remember this phrase and the video mentioned above from the late 70’s. It was always a short commercial length video that followed….

  5. A deep search will show it was on WSC (and cited in congressional testimony). Richard Glynn Hughes also had a role in its development

  6. Ok, so I know growing up there was a cartoon that took place underwater with a female hero who wore a red bathing suit and a headband with blond hair. I wanted to be her when I was little, even took a pic with my headband the same way she wore hers.
Does anyone remember this cartoon? It would have been ‘78 – ‘83 cause I know I was living in GA. I found the cartoon once, but can’t find it again. Any help would be appreciated big time!!!!!
